1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.  KJV

1
From James [C one of Jesus’ brothers and a leader in the early church;], a ·servant [slave; bond-servant] of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.

To ·all of God’s people [L the twelve tribes; C an allusion to the twelve tribes of Israel; referring either to Jewish Christians or all believers as the new covenant people of God] ·who are scattered everywhere in the world [L in the Diaspora/Dispersion; C a reference to the scattering of the Jews during the Babylonian captivity, now applied to the church]: Greetings.  EXB

1 I, James, am a slave of God and the Master Jesus, writing to the twelve tribes scattered to Kingdom Come: Hello!  MSG

1:12

12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.  KJV

12 How blessed is the man who perseveres through temptation! For after he has passed the test, he will receive as his crown the Life which God has promised to those who love him.  CJB

12 Great blessings belong to those who are tempted and remain faithful! After they have proved their faith, God will give them the reward of eternal life. God promised this to all people who love him.  ERV

12 When people are tempted and still continue strong, they should be happy. After they have proved their faith, God will reward them with life forever. God promised this to all those who love him.  NCV

12 God will bless any man who is strong to take his trouble, when he is being tested. When he has proved he is strong, he will live for ever. That is what the Lord has promised to those who love him.  WE

12Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.  MSG

1:17

17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.  KJV

17
Every good and perfect gift descends from above, from The Father of lights with whom there is no change nor a shadow of variation.  ARAM

17 Every good act of giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father who made the heavenly lights; with him there is neither variation nor darkness caused by turning.  CJB

17 Every good ·action [or act of giving] and every perfect gift ·is from God [L comes from above]. These good gifts come down from the ·Creator of the sun, moon, and stars [L the father of lights; C referring to God’s creation of the heavenly bodies ], who does not change like their shifting shadows.  EXB

1:22

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.  KJV

22. But be a doer of the word and not only a hearer, and do not deceive yourselves.  ARAM

22 ·Do what God’s teaching says; when you only listen and do nothing, you are fooling yourselves [L Be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deceiving yourselves;].  EXB

22 But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].  AMP

22 Do what God’s teaching says; don’t just listen and do nothing. When you only sit and listen, you are fooling yourselves.  ERV

1:27

27
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.  KJV

27 P
ure, unstained religion, according to God our Father, is to take care of orphans and widows when they suffer and to remain uncorrupted by this world.  GW

27 Religion that God the Father accepts as pure and ·without fault [undefiled] is this: caring for orphans and widows  ·who need help [L in their trouble/distress/persecution], and keeping yourself ·free from the world’s evil influence [L unstained/unpolluted by the world].  EXB

27 Religion that God accepts as pure and without fault is this: caring for orphans or widows who need help, and keeping yourself free from the world’s evil influence.  NCV

27 External religious worship [religion as it is expressed in outward acts] that is pure and unblemished in the sight of God the Father is this: to visit and help and care for the orphans and widows in their affliction and need, and to keep oneself unspotted and uncontaminated from the world.  AMP

27 The worship that God wants is this: caring for orphans or widows who need help and keeping yourself free from the world’s evil influence. This is the kind of worship that God accepts as pure and good.  ERV

27Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.  MSG

27 This is what God the Father wants. It is clean and right. Go and help those who have no father and mother. Go and help widow women whose husbands are dead. These people have troubles. And keep yourself clean from the wrong things in the world.  WE

2:17

17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.  KJV

17 Faith that doesn’t lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!  CEV

17
In the same way, faith by itself is dead if it doesn’t cause you to do any good things.  NOG

14-17 Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?  MSG

2:20

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?  KJV

20 Are you so slow? Do you need to be shown that faith without actions has no value at all?  CEB

20 Does some stupid person want proof that faith without deeds is useless?  CEV

20 You fool! Faith that does nothing is worth nothing. Do you want me to prove this to you?  ERV

20 Use your heads! Do you suppose for a minute that you can cut faith and works in two and not end up with a corpse on your hands?  MSG

20 The fact is, faith has to show itself through works performed in faith. If you don’t recognize that, then you’re an empty soul.  VOICE

2:26

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.  KJV

26 The body without the spirit is dead. In the same way, faith without good works is dead.  NIRV

26 Anyone who doesn’t breathe is dead, and faith that doesn’t do anything is just as dead!  CEV

26
Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.  NLT

26 Removing action from faith is like removing breath from a body. All you have left is a corpse.  VOICE

26 Yes, faith without action is as dead as a body without a soul.  PHILLIPS

5:8

8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.  KJV

8 Be patient like those farmers and don’t give up. The Lord will soon be here!  CEV

8 You must be patient too. Never stop hoping. The Lord is coming soon.  ERV

7-8 Meanwhile, friends, wait patiently for the Master’s Arrival. You see farmers do this all the time, waiting for their valuable crops to mature, patiently letting the rain do its slow but sure work. Be patient like that. Stay steady and strong. The Master could arrive at any time.  MSG

5:9

9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.  KJV

9 Brothers and sisters, don’t waste your breath complaining about one another. If you judge others, you will be judged yourself. Be very careful! You will face the one true Judge who is right outside the door.   VOICE

9 Don’t make complaints against each other in the meantime my brothers (as you wait for Christ’s return)—you may be the one at fault yourself. The judge himself is already at the door.  PHILLIPS

5:12

12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.  KJV

12 It is of the highest importance, my brothers, that your speech should be free from oaths (whether they are “by” heaven or earth or anything else). Your yes should be a plain yes, and your no a plain no, and then you cannot go wrong in the matter.  PHILLIPS

12 And since you know that he cares, let your language show it. Don’t add words like “I swear to God” to your own words. Don’t show your impatience by concocting oaths to hurry up God. Just say yes or no. Just say what is true. That way, your language can’t be used against you.  MSG
